How I Pack a Capsule Wardrobe (But Still Bring That One Pretty Dress)
Capsule wardrobes are a game-changer for travel. Less stuff. Less stress. Easier mornings. But let’s be honest—I still love a good, floaty dress or that skirt that makes me feel amazing, even if it doesn’t totally "go" with everything else I packed.
That’s the balance I aim for: intentional, repeatable pieces with just enough room for joy, confidence, and comfort.
What I Pack
Core Wardrobe (Mix + Match)
2-3 neutral tops (linen, cotton, or wrinkle-friendly fabrics)
1-2 tanks or fitted layering pieces
2 bottoms (usually one pair of loose pants and one skirt or shorts)
1 lightweight button-down or outer layer
1 dress that can go from day to night
My "Wildcard" Item
Yes, I stick to neutrals and capsule basics—but I almost always pack one fun piece. Maybe it’s a floral maxi or a silky skirt I’ll wear once, but I know I’ll love wearing it in that moment. It’s okay if it doesn’t match everything else, as long as it earns its place in your bag.
My Must-Have Comfort Add-Ons
Spanx or anti-chafing shorts: Especially if you plan to wear skirts or dresses and will be walking all day. Game. Changer.
Comfortable walking shoes: I stick to a strict shoe policy:
1 pair of stylish white sneakers
1 pair of sandals that are actually supportive
(Optional) 1 pair of hiking or workout shoes if the destination calls for it
My Packing Essentials
These items help me stay organized and sane while living out of a suitcase:
Clear TSA-friendly liquid organizer: A must for carry-on travel and airport security.
Toiletry organizer: I use this for non-liquids like skincare, makeup, and medications.
Cord organizer: Keeps chargers, adapters, and cables neat and easy to find.
Packing cubes: Game-changer for separating outfits, undergarments, and laundry as the trip goes on.
Most of these items are available in the Cultured Compass shop—because I only recommend things I actually use myself!
My Packing Philosophy: Less, But Loved
Every single item I bring has to pass three tests:
Will I actually wear this? (Not just in theory.)
Do I feel good in it?
Can I wear it for more than one thing—or will I be annoyed it’s taking up space?
Packing for travel isn’t about restriction. It’s about curating. Choosing pieces that support the kind of trip you want to have—whether that’s walking ten miles in Paris or having dinner with a view in Cinque Terre.
