Plan Like a Pro: 8 Travel Questions You’re Probably Forgetting to Ask (But Should)

You’ve booked the flights, chosen a charming Airbnb, and pinned half the internet onto your dream destination board. But before you dust off your suitcase and cue the out-of-office message, let’s talk about the not-so-glamorous part of travel planning: the little details that can turn into big headaches if you forget them.

This guide is your reality check (with love), packed with the underrated but essential questions most people forget to ask themselves—and the sanity-saving answers you’ll wish you had sooner.

1. How Will I Get From the Airport or Train Station to My Lodging?

You’re tired, maybe jetlagged, and realizing “Oh... this place is nowhere near anything.” Trust us—don’t leave this part of the journey to future-you.

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Map your route before you land (bonus points for screenshotting it).

  • Check if public transit is available at your arrival time.

  • Confirm if your accommodation is walkable with luggage.

2. Will My Phone Actually Work Without a $300 Roaming Bill?

Roaming abroad without a plan can wreck your budget faster than you can say “Why is my phone bill $400?”

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Check if your carrier has international day passes or low-cost travel plans. Jake and I have Mint mobile, and they have a decent deal for a 10 day travel pass, so we might just use that next time we go abroad! Highly suggest you check out Mint Mobile if you haven’t already! Jake and I have saved so much, and the coverage is great!

  • Use an eSIM like Airalo or Holafly for affordable data abroad, but remember these only work if your phone is unlocked from your carrier! Same goes for purchasing a physical SIM card at your destination.

  • Alternatively, you can invest in a hotspot device like this Solis Go Hotspot & Power Bank with Lifetime Data + 10GB (not affiliated!)

  • Download offline maps and translations before you leave Wi-Fi.

3. What’s My Plan for My Bags After Check-Out?

You’ve checked out at 11 AM... but your train isn’t until 6 PM. Cue dragging your bags around cobblestone streets, into cafés, or worse—turning down fun because you’re stuck babysitting a suitcase.

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Ask your hotel or Airbnb host if they can hold your luggage.

  • Use apps like LuggageHero or Bounce to find secure storage spots nearby.

  • Book a day pass at a co-working space or lounge that includes storage.

4. What’s My Day-to-Day Transport Plan?

Uber doesn’t exist everywhere. And that charming countryside village? Might not have a bus until Tuesday.

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Research local transportation—subway, tram, scooter, bike, taxi apps.

  • Consider walkability when booking lodging.

  • If renting a car, book in advance—and check parking options near your stay.

5. Will My Lodging Be Comfortable (Not Just Pretty)?

Sure, it looks dreamy online—but is that fourth-floor walk-up going to crush your soul after a long travel day? Will you melt into a puddle because it’s 90°F with no A/C?

Cultured Compass Tip:
Look for these key comfort clues before you book:

  • Elevator access or floor level

  • Air conditioning or heating

  • Bed size (a “double” is not a queen)

  • Noise level (check reviews for “loud,” “thin walls,” etc.)

6. Am I Thinking Like a Local—Or Like a Tourist?

Did you accidentally book dinner on a public holiday when everything’s closed? Or put your birthday in as 06/09 when the country writes it as 09/06?

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Learn the local date format and use it when filling out forms or reservations.

  • Check the country’s holidays and festivals—some are amazing, some may limit services.

  • Confirm local customs, like store hours, meal times, and tipping.

7. Will My Hair Dryer Survive the Voltage?

Not all plugs—or power voltages—are created equal. That “universal” adapter might not be enough.

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Bring a universal adapter (bonus if it has USB ports).

  • Double check if your electronics are dual voltage—if not, you’ll also need a converter.

8. Will My Reservation Name Match My Passport Exactly?

This one trips up so many travelers—especially when booking flights or trains abroad. Many international systems only offer fields for “First Name” and “Last Name,” but your first and middle names both go in the “First Name” field if they appear on your passport.

Cultured Compass Tip:

  • Double check what’s on your passport and match it exactly when booking transportation—especially flights.

  • If your middle name is on your passport, include it when entering your “First Name.”

  • Booking under the wrong name can lead to denied boarding, extra fees, or worse—cancelled tickets.
